This lab was based on 3D mapping environment in the ArcScene application. We created a 3D topographical model (using elevation data) for Old Town Tacoma and two more 3D demographic models (using Census data) for the City of Tacoma. The topographical model is based on high resolution elevation data and the demographic models visualizes the peaks and valleys of population density and median income in the City of Tacoma to provide a new perspective on the social fabric of our city.

Lab 5

Tacoma's Median Income

ArcGIS Tools + Method

  • First, worked with elevation data to model the topographical landscape of the city;

  • Downloaded Mediam Income for Blockgroup Shapefile from U.S Census Bureau

  • Worked with population density data to model one aspect of the social landscape in the city;

  • Lastly, worked with income data to model another aspect of the social landscape of the city.

  • Note that the peaks and valleys represent population density and median income in the City of Tacoma, not elevation.

Red represents the lowest values of median income between $13,603 & $17,394 while Dark green peaks represnets highest incomes at $103,999 to $141,963
