My research question is to devise an analytical system that will help direct future tourists and locals to the various sights, trails and amenities of Vashon Island that will best suite their individual wants and needs (including interests, time frame, and physical restrictions). I will use a common function of ArcGIS, Viewshed analyses, to determine areas that is visible from a specific location(s). By incorporating a dynamic viewshed analysis with two dimensional land I will be able to generate optimum trail route scenarios with maximum number of attractions (both on- and off-site). I will determine the condition of the trail, including trail access points and service road access, and classify them with difficulty/leisure levels. I am hoping that I could also do an interactive version of this map, where users can select certain parts of the map, such as select a 3mile walk by placing pins on the points of the trail where they want the walk to begin and end and the map will analyze the best possible route to take. Perhaps the application will let people click on any segment of the Trail to get details such as its name; length in miles; and the recreational activities allowed such as hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking paddling and more. It would also be very useful if people can walk the Trails virtually (see pictures of the sights) and measure distances from point to point.
