Lab 7: 3D Modeling of UWT
ArcGIS Tools + Method
-
This map was created by working specifically with a LiDAR point cloud that was collected during aerial overflights of Pierce County.
-
LiDar data was used to produce raster surfaces of elevation and building heights on the University of Washinton Tacoma campus.
-
X/Y coordinates in the text data was used to create two new point features from the text files: one include the heights of features such as buildings and trees, and one had these features filtered out so that it only includes ground level elevation.
-
The points was interpolated into a raster surface by using the IDW method from within the Spatial Analyst toolset.
-
We determined the heights of buildings on the UWT campus using LiDAR based raster data utilizing spatial analysis to generate the elevation of buildings on campus and the elevation of the ground (Bare Earth) on campus.
-
Two different methods (‘Zonal Statistics’ and ‘Extract Values to Points’) was used to determine: 1) the elevation of the ground beneath the buildings and 2) the elevation of the tops of the buildings.
-
ArcScene was used to produce a three dimensional model of buildings on the UWT campus by using of the data created in the previous steps to model the UWT campus in 3D. An orthophoto and road layer was incorporated into your Scene in order to create a useful (and interesting) reference map of the campus.
